Suit up, scientist - the ocean is calling.

About The Salty Lab

The Salty Lab is a research institution and education hub dedicated to turning ocean science into action.

Our work begins with science. We study shark physiology, assess coastal ecosystem health, and investigate how environmental change and urbanization impact critical nursery habitats. From juvenile shark condition to seagrass ecosystem dynamics, our projects are designed to generate data that informs conservation strategies, supports restoration efforts, and contributes to evidence-based policy.

That research does not stay in the field.

We translate our findings into education built directly from the outputs of our work. Through NGSS- and Florida-aligned lesson kits, story-driven books, and outreach programs, we create materials tailored to different age groups and learning levels. Each resource is designed to make marine science accessible, engaging, and grounded in real-world research.

Because science alone is not enough.

Every project at The Salty Lab is rooted in a larger goal: connecting research to policy. By linking scientific data with education and public engagement, we help strengthen environmental literacy, inform decision-making, and support long-term protection of coastal ecosystems.

Transparency drives trust. We provide updates from the field, behind-the-scenes insight into our research, and clear visibility into how our work contributes to measurable outcomes.

Support plays a critical role in making this work possible. Contributions and purchases directly fund field research, educational programming, and policy-focused initiatives that advance marine conservation.

The Salty Lab brings together Research, Education, and Policy under one mission: healthier oceans.

The ocean called,

and The Salty Lab answered.

How The Salty Lab Came to Be

The Salty Lab started with a simple observation: science alone does not drive change.

As a marine biologist, I spent countless hours tagging sharks, surveying seagrass, and collecting data to better understand our oceans. But time and again, I saw the same pattern. Data would be collected, analyzed, and published, then largely remain within the scientific community. The connection to policy, to decision-making, and to the people most impacted was often missing.

That gap is where The Salty Lab began.

We exist to move science beyond the page. Our work is built around ensuring that research does not stop at publication, but instead informs policy, supports conservation action, and reaches the communities it is meant to serve.

But bridging that gap is not just about scientists.

It is about people.

We believe communities should not be passive observers of conservation, but active participants in it. Through accessible education, transparent research updates, and opportunities to engage with real-world science, we empower individuals, students, and ocean advocates to understand the issues, connect with the data, and become part of the solutions shaping our coasts.

The Salty Lab is a bridge between research, education, and policy, and between scientists and the communities they serve. Because lasting conservation does not happen in isolation. It happens when people are informed, involved, and equipped to drive change alongside the science.

  • What started as a simple idea-merging marine science with everyday life-grew into a vision for hands-on conservation anyone could join.

  • From tagging sharks to designing lesson kits, we built The Salty Lab as both a shop and a research collective grounded in real science.

  • With every product sold and every partnership formed, The Salty Lab grows into classrooms, communities, and policy spaces that shape ocean protection.
